- "Bush nailed!"
- Let it be said that I think Alan Keyes is pretty much desperately wrong-headed about almost every policy issue confronting this country.
- Let it also be said that the man is a damned good debater. I may not like his take on the issues, but he does have rather a knack for actually sticking to them in a debate, unlike both McCain and Bush.
- and he mostly managed to make Bush look like the idiot he is.
- Pity he made himself look like an idiot by defending racial profiling.
- I think.

- "The Body" flees the Perotistas
- Yep, that's right. Jesse "The Body" Ventura, da gov of Minnesota (what were they thinking?) has departed the national Reform Party (whichever one that is; there seem to be two) and is urging the Minnesota branch to do the same.

- Al Gore is a chump!
- An ... interesting analysis of some problems that Gore has, by an extraordinarily disillusioned person. Can't say as I blame him, really.

- Dan Savage's Confession
- Apparently, Dan Savage isn't quite the idiot he made himself look in that Salon article.
- But I still think he needs to get out more.

- ElectionSearch 2000
- A gateway site for all of the candidates. (And I do mean ALL--some of them, all I could think was, who on earth IS that guy?) You type in an issue, such as healthcare or welfare, and ElectionSearch pulls in position papers and documents from each of the candidates sites. Very cool.

- Forbes, Keyes and Bauer: Party crashers
- I HATE this.
- I don't want to be on the same side of any issue as Horowitz, ever. He's usually as bad an ideologue as the people he condemns in this issue.
- But.
- He happens to be right here. Both about the effect of the far right on the party and their tactics AND their issues.
- Dammit.

- GOP prayer breakfast rips gays
- Well. Isn't this special.
- I'm sure that it'll do ever so much for the California GOP's effort to show itself as a party of peace and tolerance. Come one come all!

- GOP's loathe/hate/want-your-vote relationship with Latinos
- Ah, yes. The sort of item for which this weblog was named. The GOP is courting the latino vote at the same time as some wings of the party are attacking them obliquely through comments on immigration policy and ads that say, essentially, "Fear the Latino! They want your job!"

- Human Rights Watch urges the Shrub to stay Betty Lou Beets' execution
- Not that it has a ghost of a chance, of course. And even if it did, at this point, he can only stay it for 30 days, and that only once.
- I hadn't realized the extent of her attorney's malfeasance, however; I'd thought it was just plain old incompetence. However, according to Human Rights Watch, "He failed to present mitigating evidence of spousal abuse at Beets' sentencing. In addition, Beets' trial attorney did not disclose evidence indicating Beets had not killed her husband for financial gain, an aggravating factor that led to her death sentence. Had the attorney testified on Beets' behalf to present this evidence, he would have been forced to excuse himself from her case and relinquish media rights Beets had agreed to give him to pay for his legal services. Beets' attorney was subsequently convicted for criminal actions in another death penalty case and sentenced to federal prison."

- Killer George Dubya: compassionately conservative ... bigot?
- So.
- Killer George Dubya speaks at Bob Jones U, which bans interracial dating, and had to be forced by court order to admit blacks.
- So.
- I'm beginnning to suspect that not only does KGWB have a few problems with the little gray cells, but so do his advisers. I mean, no matter how much he wants to appeal to his conservative base (which doesn't precisely trust him anyway), but surely someone of his advisers should have said, "It's one thing to have most minorities dislike you, but this, on top of all the other problems you've had, is just brain damaged."
- Apparently not.

- Want to know where contributions are coming from and going to in the campaign? Try this site.
- Reading contributions from your zip code can be truly strange. For some reason, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange is the top recipient of political donations from my zip code; they have their own PAC. Curious. This means that income in my district is truly all over the map; I can't imagine the people in my neighborhood actually caring about the Merc.

- Sophisticated litmussers
- Pat Robertson tells his faithful to get sophisticated about their support for Killer George Dubya, and to basically stop talking about the abortion issue, because it costs him moderate votes. Once he's in office, then you hound him until he follows through.
- Gee, I hope Forbes and Keyes hang around for a while. Let's face it; as long as those yahoos are out there opening their mouths, the issue won't go away.

- South Carolina GOP: brain-damaged AND racist
- I must admit, watching the GOP run scared from McCain is really vastly entertaining. It makes them do such incredibly stupid things. I mean, why would anybody think you could get away with shutting down polls in only majority black districts? And then to run back and say, "Well, then we'll do a few in white districts as well", as the person in the article says, only exposes what they were trying to do in the first place.
- I must admit, I'm really rather surprised that, even for only a primary, the control that South Carolina's parties exercise over their polls opening and closing hasn't been ruled unconstitutional.
- Of course, I don't understand why Democrats are supporting McCain, either, unless it's just to tweak the GOP.

- Surviving Clinton with your rep intact
- An interesting article about how Mike McCurry, former Clinton press secretary, survived "Flytrap" (well, it's better than "Monicagate") with his reputation intact. Mostly, it seems to involve running way far away from Clinton whenever he was about to make statements of fact.

- The new Democrats' piffling trifles
- from the Weekly Standard, just so's you know the political orientation.
- Although I don't disagree that the New Democrats have focused on implementing small things at the cost of Big Ideas, I would like to know when the word "liberal" became so desperately discredited in American politics. Why is a liberal viewpoint no longer even marginally viable? The Democrats push to the center, shoving the Republicans so hard to the right that they have a hard time appearing even vaguely connected to their own traditions, and the Democrats have clearly loosened their hold on theirs. They know full well that most of their liberal constituency has nowhere else viable to go. (although they don't seem to consider that people deserted will also desert, as keeps happening to the Dems in elections.)
- so what the hell happened?

- This man is not a Republican
- An ... intriguing analysis of why the Republican party hates John McCain.
- The question does remain: if he's not a Republican--and he's certainly not a Democrat--then what the hell is he? The article seems to postulate that he's Clinton Lite (as in dietetic, not as in smaller--term used with FDA approval!).
- I must admit, I feel rather sorry for him, in a way. McCain has "I wanna be Prez" disease, and he's got it real BAD, nearly as bad as good ol' Bob "the face of erectile dysfunction" Dole. The problem is, his beliefs have changed over time, diverged from Republican party orthodoxy (does anyone else feel like we're talking about the Soviet or Chinese communist parties here?), and it's left him with no place to go. In a less rigid political system, he could simply move to a viable third party, something more progressive (the Reform Party, such as it is, making good ol' Ronnie look like a flaming liberal from time to time, would probably not be a good fit), but that isn't the system he's stuck with working through.
