- Apologetic Rocker says he lost his cool
- Did he? Really?
- You know, the interview doesn't make him come off any better, somehow. I'm watching it even as I type.
- According to him, the ONLY question the reporter asked to start this was "What do you think about the people of New York?" And he goes into this long disquisition about why he doesn't like them.
- Gee, John, ya think you could have said all this and then said to the reporter, "I can't say as I like them," and just left it at that?
- I can understand that he doesn't like them. I just don't understand seven hours of stupidity. It was a seven hour long interview.

- Apparently, good ol' Jerry lacks a bit on the followthrough
- "More than two months after the groundbreaking meeting between the reverends Jerry Falwell and Mel White, the two still disagree about what it means to tone down antigay rhetoric, The [Lynchburg, Va.] News & Advance reports."
- I believe the proper response to this is: DUH!

- Apparently, McCain has gaydar
- ... and we all know what that means, right?
- Oh, all RIGHT. Probably not. But the man does show a really impressive tendency to get his foot caught in his mouth. And then he sucks on it for a while. It's really impressive.

- Apparently, they noticed
- Sometime earlier, either in the log or the journal, I mentioned that the Mormon community in Albuquerque seemed to be both powerful and almost invisible.
- It seems that they decided to rectify that last. With Austrian crystal chandeliers and gold-leaf. InDEED.

- Athlete Hazing:
- "Eight out of 10 student athletes are subjected to hazing as a condition of being accepted on a team, according to a study of initiation rituals among National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) teams."
- OK, anyone surprised by this?... Didn't think so.
- The part that really got me, though, was this:
- "Each year, kids who administer hazing go a step further than what was done to them," he said. "Pretty soon, they step over the cliff." [...] He may be onto something. Other fraternity and sorority members participating in the chat session shared stories of paddling, having dirty jockstraps shoved into their mouths, being sodomized and performing group sex acts in front of other classmates. [...] These chat-room tales of degradation and sexual abuse elicited condemnation from some who said they were in fraternities; they scorned not the hazers, but the victims divulging details of their initiations.
- What the heck is up with THAT? I mean, sexually assaulting a teammate to make them BELONG?
- Of course, the hazers wouldn't see it that way. Of course not. (I'll bet the women they've dated have some harrowing stories to tell, though.)

- Austria stumbles to isolation
- This is a very ... peculiar position, really. Basically, governments everywhere are telling Austria, "Yes, we recognize that these people were legitimately elected. Yes, we recognize that you have the right to form whatever government you wish from those legitimately elected people. Nonetheless, if you choose to form a government, we will refuse to deal with such people."
- Gee, where were these wonders of probity with Indonesia, where the government wasn't even legitimately elected? Or any of the military dictatorships, for that matter? Would they have dared to isolate France if the National Front had taken power? (Well, Israel might have, but nobody else.)
- And now Austria's president, who was already frozen out of negotiations, is in the relentlessly interesting position of deciding what happens next. He can accept or reject this government. And whether or not Austrians like the Freedom party, they can't help but be incensed at this heavy-handed attempt to intervene in their internal affairs. I mean, just imagine: say that Pat Robertson somehow managed to become president. (In a worse economic situation, it would be entirely likely; right-wing isolationist bigots always appeal during hardships.) Would the US be willing to accept--would anyone else even try--a statement from the world to the effect of, "We think he's icky and if you make him president, we won't play with you anymore."
- Welcome to the brave new world! Where WE have the right to dictate YOUR government!

- Bad boys, bad boys, what'cha gonna do?
- Kids, it seems, like bad boys. So says a study in Developmental Psychology, as reported by HealthSCOUT.
- OK, I just want to know why they needed to do a whole study for this. I mean, what person who has EVER been a child in this country did NOT know this?

- I actually hit this by accident. I'm not sure what I was looking for right now, because this just stuck in my head. Bellow just became a daddy at 84. Yeesh.

- Bill Bradley's SAT
- This is a thoroughly confusing article, in some ways. I think it wants to be a commentary on affirmative action; it just hasn't decided which way it wants to fall.

- Bomb threats routine at New Mexico high school
- Eleven over the course of this school year so far.
- I wonder what's happening at this school to create this. I wonder if it's happening like this at other high schools, other schools in the country.

- Bradley talks about race
- Well ... I'm not sure what good it does him. I mean, apparently he's saying that we should get rid of bigotry. So what? Is any candidate that wants to get elected going to say, "Hey, I think bigotry is good! Let's keep it! Race crimes uber alles!" Get real, here.

- Chicago Housing Authority instituting reforms
- I don't know ... I mean, tearing down the housing blocks is a good idea, but it looks like, for the most part, they'll just be replacing them with blocks of low-rises. I mean, this is better--it's less dense, if nothing else--but if they don't do it right, then they just concentrate poverty again. Of course, the problem is that nobody wants Those Poor People in their neighborhoods, but if you don't break up the neighborhoods, you don't break up the blocks of poverty.

- Commandments ahoy
- I wish I could say that I didn't believe this was happening again. But I do. State legislators everywhere have nothing better to do with their time than try to sneak religion into public schools.

- Congress asks military to suspend anthrax shots
- Actually, what I find interesting is that it's essentially a meaningless request. Granted, the vaccine has been causing all sorts of problems, from morale problems to illness. Nonetheless, this is just a House panel report, and the military isn't required to act on it. Thus, both sides are satisfied. Congress has something they can point to their constituents and say, "Look, we told them they should stop," and the military can safely ignore them.

- Court orders retrial for death row inmate
- "A new trial is necessary in order to preserve the trustworthiness and reputation of the judicial process," Justice Mary Anne McMorrow wrote.
- Just curious: is there anyone out there that actually believes in the trustworthiness of the judicial process?
