- "I feel like I just lost my virginity!" says Tony Bennett
- "Bennett said he made a snap decision, and went with it. 'I feel like I just lost my virginity,' he said. 'It was the first time I was kissed on the lips by a man, and I must say I liked it very much.'
- Totally cool!

- "It takes two to tango"
- Isn't this lovely? A judge told an eleven year old rape victim that it was basically her fault that she got raped. Maryland advocates are trying to get him pulled from the bench.

- "Politically Incorrect" and gay marriage
- Aw, how sweet. Turning an event that should be really special into a media event designed to be the kickoff of a Very Special Episode of "Politically Incorrect." I'm sure that this will make Bill Maher jerk off extra hard right before this show. (Supposedly, that's what he does before every show, according to E! A sort of good luck charm/tension relief, I gather. "Rub the genie ... wait, that's not a genie...")

- Failing by design
- You know, it won't get them anywhere, ultimately (not unless they can get every student in the state to fail every test all the time, anyway), but it's kind of nice to see students fighting back against standardized tests like this.

- Rampaging supervisors strike again
- It's probably just that this is the profession I know the most about, the one that I'm in. But I have been a secretary and done other jobs on my way to this position, and somehow, it strikes me that libraries are more prone than other occupations to having supervisors that are either very good or astoundingly bad. (I've had both in the same job; at the same damn time, even.)

- Squeegee kids all washed up
- I wonder if this would be legal here. I wonder if anyone's even tried it; it seems so obvious. I mean, at a minimum, you could handle it as an issue of public safety.

- The making of the boy bands and girl wonders
- An article about the making of the Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, Britney, Christina, Mandy and all those other teen wonders. Truly creepy, really. (You know why Britney Spears' "Baby One More Time" video is so schoolgirl-sleazy? Because it was directed by an actual pornographer. ICK!)

- The risks of the online journal
- If you have an online journal, and you EVER speak less than glowingly about your job, this article is for YOU. Yes, you CAN get sued over the content of your journal, when it's placed in the public eye. Something to be aware of.

- "Angels" walking a fine line
- A piece on CBS' new show "City of Angels". I hope it survives--the little I saw of the first episode looked good.

- "Isn't She Great?"
- Can I just say that I hope this film is terrificles? I mean, the commercials look so exuberantly cheesy and tacky, and the lines are SO over the top...

- "Out of body is not out of mind"
- You know, maybe I'm just weird, but it would never have occurred to me to suggest that people who have had near-death experiences are nutso. I mean, it just wouldn't. I don't know why.

- "Out of Exile" by Deirdre McCloskey
- An article by Deirdre McCloskey (formerly Donald) about what it was like to make the change from male to female. (The family alone was a nightmare of the first water.)
- Read fast; I've no idea how long links from the Tribune Magazine persist.

- "Women's Libber" denied promotion
- This is about the most sophistical argument I've ever seen from a court. The Supremes refused to hear this case, rejecting it without comment. Despite the fact that everyone agrees that the officer in question was denied a promotion directly due to her beliefs, she's denied the opportunity to sue for damages because she never "expressed those beliefs in writing or by joining an organization."
- Taken to a logical conclusion, that means that someone could deny me a position or promotion because I might believe in the positions of the NAACP.
- Like I said before, the Supremes hate the people of this country. I wonder why...

- l'Affaire Rocker continue, or, major brain damage strikes again
- ...and NOW the players' association protests.
- Can I just say that I think the baseball players' association are a bunch of craven cowards? They should have protested the original "treatment" sentence, let alone this. I mean, if physical assault is usually unpunished, or frequently lightly punished, then he frankly did nothing to deserve this.
- Yes, I still think that somewhere in his heart of hearts, Rocker is a racist pig. But, you know, strange as it may seem, the constitution pretty much guarantees you the right to BE a racist pig. Freedom of speech isn't worth much if it's not the freedom for unpopular idiotic speech. If he'd been saying the same things at a gay pride rally or a MLK day event ... well, he'd have really gotten what he deserved, but that's another issue. At least in that case, the well-traveled "you don't yell fire in a crowded theatre and you don't incite" exceptions would apply.
- Besides, I think just trying to exist in major league bseball, let alone on his team, would be punishment enough for the next year.

- Adios Barbie, or, Mattel's Revenge
- Mattel is suing the authors/publishers of a book called "Adios Barbie: Young women write about body image". I suspect that they're on relatively firm ground about using images of parts of Barbie without permission, and on fairly shaky ground about using the name. After all, even with direct reference, Barbie is a fairly common name/nickname.
- The message from the editor, though, ("Plastic Rap") is most wondrous sophistical. As if they had no idea that Mattel would be upset that the book takes the position that Barbie is Not A Good Thing! quel horreur! I mean, let's get a grip, shall we?

- Another police corruption case
- It seems that Rochester police beat and threatened a witness until he testified the way that they wanted. The man and the person convicted with him then spent 25 years in jail for a crime they didn't commit.
- Justice system. Right.
