- "It takes two to tango"
- Isn't this lovely? A judge told an eleven year old rape victim that it was basically her fault that she got raped. Maryland advocates are trying to get him pulled from the bench.

- "No bark, no bite": Portland vs their police
- How Portland is trying to install a new citizens' police oversight board; the current one seems to be rather toothless. "The city's new police chief, Mark Kroeker, says he's "open to revision as long as it's not done according to dogma," but makes it clear that he considers civilian discipline of police "a very dangerous move." "
- Well, of course he does.
- When did civilians lose control of their own governments? And police? And why on earth is this happening?

- "Trial and Error": Illinois vs the innocent
- " A Tribune investigation found hundreds of homicide cases where prosecutors violated their oath by hiding evidence or twisting the truth. Innocent people went to prison, some to Death Row."

- Actual Innocence
- To be sure, this is a promo site for the book. But there's actual information in the promo materials. And the authors were on "The Charlie Rose Show" tonight, talking about their book.
- For some reason, the authors are actually surprised that prosecutors resist testing evidence in cases where it seems that an innocent person may have been executed. They suspect that most of this is due to emotional aspects--the people have a lot invested in believing that a given person has done it, and people who have identified a given person frequently can't conceive that they could have made such an egregious mistake.
- Police and prosecutorial misconduct, forced or false confessions, incompetent or corrupt lawyers ... It's all horribly depressing.

- Another police corruption case
- It seems that Rochester police beat and threatened a witness until he testified the way that they wanted. The man and the person convicted with him then spent 25 years in jail for a crime they didn't commit.
- Justice system. Right.

- Austin 7 found guilty
- Seven Chicago policemen, formerly serving in the Austin district, found guilty of robbing drug dealers, official corruption and other charges. Somehow (and I admit I'm not sure how) this seems to be related to another case, where other Austin district officers are accused of beating confessions out of suspects; as many as 50 cases may need to be revisited.

- Black Secret Service agents claim discrimination
- Well, given the problems the FBI has had with this, I can't say that I'm even vaguely surprised that the problem exists. I am surprised that it's taken so long for them to do anything about it, though.

- Boro Park Betrayed
- It seems that the NYPD may have killed a harmless person, then covered it up.
- Anyone surprised?

- Death unqualified, part 9,678
- another Illinois man will probably have his death sentence vacated. Due, yet again, to prosecutorial incompetence and possibly, prosecutorial malfeasance.
- So, in the past decade, more or less, that's 14 exonerated, 12 executed. Perhaps it's just me, but I don't think this record speaks at all well for the crime-and-punishment system. It doesn't suggest that those twelve died for any good reason.

- Death Unqualified: Nobody wants to know
- Nobody in power wants to know how or why so many, more than half, of Illinos' death penalty cases unravel quite so badly. Nobody wants to investigate the police. Nobody wants to investigate the lawyers.
- Nobody wants to know.

- FBI investigating LAPD Rampart cases
- Including, it seems, charges of murder and attempted murder. It seems that the LA police chief is finally realizing that there's simply no way to manage this as a purely internal probe (DUH!) and has asked the FBI for more help.

- LA Mayor: Let the corrupt LAPD investigate itself
- Really, that's pretty much what he says. In a case where LAPD financial liability is estimated at $125 million and rising, where so far 32 convictions (including at least one death sentence) have been reversed and 20 officers (so far) are no longer on the job, the mayor insists that the LAPD is competent to investigate itself.
- Well, that ought to just instill loads of confidence in the propriety and honesty of the LAPD, shouldn't it?

- LAPD Cops rewarded for shooting people
- I begin to wonder how the LAPD is going to be able to function at all at the end of this mess. And whether or not it should be allowed to.

- LAPD deports witnesses to abuse
- It seems that, as a matter of policy, the LAPD would pick up Latinos who had witnessed police abuse, and get them deported. This despite official city and INS policy that said that witnesses to crimes wouldn't be asked about such things, because it meant that people wouldn't report crime if they'd get deported.
- Surprise surprise.

- LAPD strikes again
- I begin to suspect that the only way to clean up the LAPD is to purge it of everyone currently working for it. Which would clean out any good officers as well as bad ones. Which couldn't be done on a department that size anyway--what would they do? Turn over policing to the California State Police?

- LAPD whistleblower sentenced to five years
- "He was sentenced under a plea bargain that grants him immunity for other crimes he has admitted to investigators, district attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said earlier."
- I must admit to wondering precisely what those crimes are. Given what we know about, what admissions have come out, I'm thinking that he got a MAJOR free pass to get only a five-year sentence.
- At least the way things are going, he'll probably not be alone in jail too long. It looks like several of his fellow coppers might be joining him in a year or two.
- Then again, perhaps he'd rather take his chances with the other prisoners instead.

- Los Angeles Police Department
- Over 3,000 cases will need to be reviewed as a result of a widening corruption problem in the LAPD. It's hardly surprising that the LAPD officers are thoroughly discouraged and looking to leave at this point. In any event, this links you to an overall index of the stories.

- More Rampart convictions overturned
- I must admit, I'm beginning to feel very sorry for anyone involved in law enforcement in Los Angeles these days. I mean, through no fault of their own, LA's prosecutors are watching these cases unwind and fall apart on them. The police department gets another black mark on its record, and the citizens of LA have even more reason not to trust them.
- I wonder if it's even possible to come back from something like this. If it's possible that the LAPD will ever be viewed as an even vaguely trustworthy organization by the people it's supposed to serve.

- Philadelphia cops bury assault cases to lower crime rate
- The title really pretty much says it all. The sex crimes unit is under investigation because it "lost" or buried "thousands of reported sex offenses" (according to APBnews) so that the stats would be lower.

- Police Complaint Center
- Well ... I'm not sure what to make of it. As a tracking source, its probably OK, although it only tracks complaints reported to the Center itself, I think. Their database is just this side of useless; it doesn't sort and the display is incredibly wide. They also ... well, the one report available on their site strikes me as just this side of entrapment. I mean, yes, police departments need to give out the proper information for filing a complaint. But still ... it feels like they were looking more for people to do things wrong, somehow. (Well, it was in cooperation with the Dallas FOX station; of course they were looking for something wrong. It is interesting, though, that they don't allege that any of the incorrect information was distributed deliberately.)
- You can actually file a complaint through the site. A warning: turn off Javascript if you want to see/use their form (which, of course, makes submitting the form difficult). They don't have their CSS in the right place, so if you have Javascript on, you can't see the form; it automatically bounces you to a 404 to tell you it can't find the CSS. They also charge for certain services.
