good ol' pat

Ah, yes. If it's a national election season, then it must be time for Pat Buchanan to issue his quadrennial "Breed, white people, breed!" polemic.

Pat Buchanan: Mexico recapturing U.S. lands? - - MSNBC.com

...Chapter 2. The Invasion
Will the American Southwest become a giant Kosovo, a part of the nation separated from the rest by language, ethnicity, history and culture, to be reabsorbed in all but name by Mexico from whom we took these lands in the time of Jackson and Polk? Chicano chauvinists and Mexican agents have made clear their intent to take back through demography and culture what their ancestors lost through war....

[...] By 2050 ... there will be almost 2.5 times as many people here as in 1960: 420 million. The share of the population of European descent will be a minority, as it is today in California, Texas and New Mexico. And that minority will be aging, shrinking and dying. There will be as many Hispanics here, 102 million, as there are Mexicans today in Mexico.

By nation of origin of our people, by 2050, America will be a Third World country.... Our great cities will all look like Los Angeles today. Los Angeles and the cities of the Southwest will look like Juarez and Tijuana....

But ... weren't Mexico and points southward colonized by Spain and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Portugal? Aren't those countries European? Aren't Spanish and Portuguese and, you know, English considered European languages?

Ah, never mind. Expecting logic from the GOP's most public racist nutcase is a bit much, I know.

.....Islamization of Europe is an unavoidable consequence, indeed, an inevitability, once Europe ceased to reproduce itself. The descendants of the men who went out from Europe to conquer and Christianize the world have decided to leave the world. The culture of death triumphs, as the poor but fecund Muslims, expelled centuries ago, return to inherit the estate. ...

"...the poor, but fecund, Muslims". Yes. Well. Quite.

My, what an epic amount of racist baggage is contained within the above statement by good ol' Pat.

I will say this about Buchanan: he's kind of up-front in his Republican Racism creed. You know going in that, if you are not white, you have no standing with him. He's willing to tolerate people like Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice because he has to put on the public face, after all; publicly declaiming black people as not-American is just de trop.

Here's one of the more puzzlingly nutty statements, though:

...Chapter 9. What is a Nation?
Every true nation is the creation of a unique people, separate from all others. Indeed, if America is an ideological nation grounded no deeper than in the sandy soil of abstract ideas, she will not survive the storms of this century any more than the Soviet Union survived the storms of the last.…

A true nation is held together not by any political creed but by patriotism.… For two centuries, men have died for America.

Democracy is not enough. If the culture dies, the country dies.

So apparently, people willing to come to this country, vote in this country, fight for this country and die for this country, as many an immigrant has done ... these people are not truly Americans. Their children, born in this country, and who have done all of the above, those children are not truly Americans. The only way to be a true American is to speak the English and to be pale as the driven snow. So nice to have that cleared up, isn't it?

...If we do not solve our civilizational crisis — a disintegrating culture, dying populations, and invasions unresisted — the children born in 2006 will witness in their lifetimes the death of the West. In our hearts we know what must be done. We must stop the invasion. But do our leaders have the vision and will to do it?

I will note that, based on these excerpts, Pat seems to have decided that he needs to make a more sophisticated appeal. (No, really, it IS more sophisticated.) Past appeals of this type have been peculiarly focused; the message wasn't so much "breed, white people, breed!" as it was "breed, white women, breed!" There was a very firm sense that it was white women's fault, for using that pesky contraception, that the white race was in decline. At least now, it looks like men may get at least a little of the blame.

Here's the interesting thing, to me: Pat Buchanan rails against the idea that white people should be "sentenced" to be a minority in their own country. Yet, for the bulk of racial and ethnic minorities, this is our own country as well. We were born here, raised here, we fought for this country, may die for this country. Yet somehow, it is considered meet that we be "sentenced" to be forever minorities in this country that we have done as much to perpetuate as any.

But then, in the world of Good Ol' Pat, I don't suppose we count, do we?
