aids and the plague

Well ... if you completely and totally ignore social effects (which is the only way this research could work), this research could also explain some of the reasons that the AIDS epidemic has the particular demographics here that it does. Given that it's racing through minority communities at a strikingly fast rate, it would make a certain sense that another disease conferred a somewhat greater resistance to Europeans and their descendants.

Or, you know, you could chalk it up to culture, income, class, education and condom use (or lack thereof). Which makes a teensy bit more sense to me, but there you go.
