On Friday, more than two weeks after releasing its first counts of same-sex households, the Census Bureau issued a "technical note" warning that comparisons between 1990 and 2000 were "not substantively valid" due to "differences in data processing."
Yes, I imagine that an administrative sex change would produce some interesting differences in the way the data turned out between 1990 and 2000. The funny part is that where you live made such a difference in whether or not the census committed unofficial surgery upon you; men living together in, say, West Hollywood became "unmarried partners" of the same sex, but in Malibu, one of the men somehow became a woman. (I should think the man/woman count in 1990 was a terribly bizarre thing, as well.)
